Aurora Colorado History

Founded in 1891, the city of Aurora was originally named Fletcher by its founder, former Chicago resident Donald Fletcher.
In 1907, the town changed its name to Aurora.
In 1921 Aurora was selected for the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center to treat soldiers afflicted with mustard gas poisoning.
1929 Aurora becomes a city
1942 Buckley Air Field is constructed
1960 Aurora's population exceeds 50,000
1995 The Fitzsimmons Redevelopment Authority is created
2000 The population exceeds 292,000
2000 Buckley is now Buckley Air Force Base
2004 The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center at Fitxsimmons is vibrant and active
